Warehouse Wandering: Brickwork

Welcome to Warehouse Wandering, where we share our adventures wandering through the district! I’ve always loved the expansive use of brickwork throughout the district, signs that things can persist through time even as the interior identity flows and changes—but most importantly though, they make really good selfie backdrops.

This week features some of our favourite brickwork in the district, and throughout the spring and summer we’ll be sharing more Warehouse Wandering adventures, so be sure to check back here for more. Don’t forget to share your own adventures with us on Instagram using #warehousewandering.

Above, faded orange with yellow and brown undertones at 8th Ave and Hamilton St. Remind me to find a lipstick in this colour. (Aside: unsure if this building’s made it onto the @prairietypography Instagram page, but it deserves to.)

This spot is across the street from a cluster of 7 amazing businesses in the Weston Bakery building (1377 Hamilton St), making it a convenient backdrop for those post-workout selfies (Local Barre) or the look-I-made-it-across-the-street-without-eating-this-donut food photo (The Everyday Kitchen) or your new-hair-who-dis profile pic (Unified Salon).

A classic deep red with some slightly purple undertones beside Gale’s Florist at Dewdney and Hamilton St. Iconic. (Ignore the frowns in each picture; it was very sunny even with shades, okay.)

Deep and rich maroon on 8th Ave and Rose St, home to Salon Society. You can see other great buildings nearby (though this one has much better contrast for pink hair). A definite frontrunner for a favourite.

Brickwork through the ages on the corner of Dewdney and Rose St. But my favourite spot was just around the corner from here (like literally around the corner of the building; I don’t mean that as a figure of speech).

No parking, but yes, selfies. Love a good stencil.

1916 Dewdney Ave, a lovely building with two (or more!) selfie backdrops in one place, is home to a handful of businesses including Mabel & Martha’s and Willows Wellsch Orr & Brundige.

There are only about a thousand other examples of great brickwork in the district, so get out and share your #warehousewandering pics!
